During my visit to Costa Rica, I learned about regions known as blue zones and became intrigued. Blue Zones are locations worldwide where individuals typically enjoy longer and healthier lives compared to the global average.
There are 5 Blue Zones:
Okinawa, Japan
Sardinia, Italy
Nicoya Penninsula, Costa Rica
Icaria, Greece
Loma Linda, California, USA
In March, I listened to one of Dan Buettner's audiobooks, The Blue Zones. In this book, Dan shares his discoveries as he visits the Blue Zones.
Dan claims that through his research there are 9 things that people in these blue zones have in common.
They move naturally. Doing things like hiking and gardening.
They have a purpose.
They have routines that create less stress.
They stop eating when they are 80% full.
They eat a diet heavy in plants and light in meats.
They drink moderately with friends.
They believe in a higher power and attend religious services 4 times a month.
They put their family first and elders are taken care of by their families.
They are part of a group that supports a healthy life.
All 9 of these are things we can easily do in our lives. I am committing to work toward the first 3 of these over the next month.
I will start taking daily walks around my neighborhood, parking further away, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator when available.
I am going to write down my specific purpose(s) in life at this moment and post it somewhere I can see daily.
I am going to define a morning routine that includes time to exercise and and evening routine that includes time to unwind.
By the end of April I should have these three things well underway. Hold me accountable, ask me how it's going. I will report back at the beginning of May!
Living a non toxic life doesn't just mean getting rid of toxic chemicals or toxic people. It also means growing and getting rid of toxic ideas!
